August 2: Scrapbooking with Tami

Join Tami from Creative Memories as she facilitates an evening of organizing and beautifully presenting your box full of photos. Come create some beautiful memories with your Father's Day, Graduation Day, or vacation photos. Please bring your photos and albums with you-all other supplies will be provided. Album pages will be available for purchase.      

August 3, 17, & 31: Viewpoints

This month we will be exploring how the internet and digital media have completely transformed contemporary life in the fascinating installment of PBS's Frontline titled Frontline: Digital Nation, which examines the effect of the digital media on relationships, careers, daily life, education, the military and more.       

August 3, etc: Jazz, 10 Part Documentary Series

Throughout the month we will be showing acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns' celebration of Jazz, the "most American art form," in all of its incarnations over the decades-from its origins in blues and ragtime through its evolution into swing, bebop and fusion. The series follows the growth and development of jazz from the gritty streets of New Orleans to Lincoln Gardens on Chicago's Southside, the hallowed piece of land where Louis Armstrong first won fame. Each part focuses on a different time period of Jazz evolution. Check your calendar for the dates and times and keep your eye on Channel 22 for individual descriptions.     

August 5: Tenia Nelson and Tyson Ailshie Jazz Duo

Join musicians Tenia Nelson, formally trained jazz pianist and her partner Tyson Ailshie on stand-up bass as they bring their unique musical stylings to Holly Creek. They will share some of your favorite jazz compositions as well as some newer-maybe even some of their own! 

August 8: Zoe Proett Violin Recital

Resident Jo Proett's talented granddaughter is back to share with us her wonderful skill on the violin. She will be performing pieces from a recent compilation that her youth orchestra did in the Spring including the piece that won her the coveted violin solo!    

August 9: Current Events

An emerging Chinese policy of "indigenous innovation" favors domestic enterprises at the expense of US firms via a web of patent laws, product standards and licensing requirements that many say are putting non-Chinese firms at a significant disadvantage. Join Active Minds as we examine how China's single party communist rule has impacted its path to economic development and how this emerging conflict is viewed by the world business community.  

August 11: Music Appreciation with Jim Condor

Join Active Minds as we investigate the genius of Beethoven. When the brash young Ludwig moved to Vienna in his early 20's, he set the town on its ear with his pianistic abilities. Mozart advised "Mark that young man; he will make himself a name in the world!" We will listen to several examples of his compositions and discuss the enduring enigma that is Beethoven. No prior musical knowledge is needed. Bring your love of music and your curiosity!     

August 17: Creative Card Making with Dorothy

This month, participants will be working on a Happy Birthday card (you can see a sample at the concierge desk). All supplies will be pre-cut to make it easier for participants and are provided at no cost to you. All interested residents must sign up at the concierge desk in order to attend. A second session may be added if the first session fills up.      

August 18: Underwater Adventures

Join scuba diving enthusiast Debbie Taylor as she shares her passion for all things aquatic! Debbie will be showing a video from one of her recent watery travels to an exotic locale that is sure to awe and inspire you!      

August 18: Live From Lincoln Center "South Pacific"

If you missed your chance to go see the live play at the Buell Theatre, then here is your chance to see the 2008 Tony Award winning musical in all its glory! Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic tale of love and prejudice, "South Pacific," revived in its original glory by Lincoln Center Theatre, comes to the television screen courtesy of "Live From Lincoln Center." Come on down to the Holly Creek Theatre for "Some Enchanted Evening!"

August 19: Book Club

This month's book selection will be Olive Kitteredge by Elizabeth Strout. Annette Larson will be presenting. New members are always welcome! For more information call LaRue Keiser at *5804. The September book selection will be Desert Queen by Janet Wallach.

August 23: Current Events

With the recent 80th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic, join Active Minds for a review of aviation in the US. We will begin with the Wright brothers and end with a look at the airline industry.     

August 25: The Great Gatsby Gala

What better way to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk than by harking back to the Roaring 20's for a little bit of glitz and glamour? Centennials will be decked out as Jay Gatsby's house, the main character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's popular novel, The Great Gatsby, for an elegant evening of cocktails, live jazz, dancing on the patio and an exceptional dinner menu prepared by your favorite Holly Creek chefs. Check your mailboxes for your invitation to the big bash and plan to be there for a swinging good time!  

August 27: Haven Moses Stroke Presentation

Meet Haven Moses, former Broncos wide receiver, in person and learn more about stroke prevention and how to recognize the first signs of stroke. Haven will share his own stroke survival story and answer questions from participants. Come at 1:30pm for pictures and autographs and stay for the presentation at 2:00pm.
